Mobile Intertubes

Owing to the fact that in the place I am living this year I cannot get a DSL/Cable/56k landline connection, I have decided to invest in mobile broadband from 3. I will try this on my Ubuntu laptop soon, but I'm being lazy at the moment.

The speeds are not great. Despite being advertised as up to 3Mbps, and the area I'm in having good coverage, I have had download speeds ranging from < 1kBps to 20kBps (or 8kbps - 170kbps). Perhaps it's just local factors immediately local to me.

I have done some googling, and it appears that I can run the modem with Ubuntu. I've not had much luck so far - although that may be me being lazy and not bothering to reboot with the modem connected. Another option for me to speed things up may be to install a proxy server (apache probs) on the machine that's currently acting as the gateway. However, surely Firefox's cache should be just as good if I mainly use this one machine?

We'll see what happens.
